Frequently Asked Questions

Q - What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botilimum toxin is produced by a bacterium that blocks the release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that cause muscle movement.

Q - What can Botulinum toxin be used for?

In medicine, botulinum toxin is injected directly into over active muscles.  It has safetly and effectively been used for the treatment of strabismus (cross-eye) and blepharospasm (eyelid spasm).

In facial aesthetics, it is used to treat wrinkles commonly referred to as:

  • Crows feet (around the eyes)
  • Frown lines (between the eyes)
  • Forehead lines

Botulinum toxin can also be used to treat excessive sweating.

Q - How long has Botulinum Toxin been used?

It has been used safely since the early eighties.

Q - How does it work?

Hyperactivity or over use of the facial expression muscles often results in the development of deep frown lines, forehead lines and/or crows feet.  Injecting botulinum toxin into the affected area temporarily paralyses the underlying muscles responsible for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed and pleasant appearance.  The wrinkles become smoother or disappear altogether.

Q - When and how long does botulinum toxin work?

The initial effects of treatment become visible within 48 to 72 hours.  The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks.

Your facial expression will become more relaxed but by no means mask-like.  The overall result is very natural.

The effects of treatment generally lasts for 4 to 6 months.  Re-treatment is then required.

Q - Are there any side effect?

Botulinum toxin injection is generally a safe and effective treatment.  Nevertheless, certain side effects can occur and are mostly reversible.

Potential side effects:

  • Bruising or swelling at the injection site.
  • Slight feeling of nausea.
